Like any office accommodation, the Foreign & Commonwealth Office's King Charles Street building requires fixtures and fittings to be replaced as they become out-dated and unreliable. In the case of this Grade 1 listed Whitehall location, choosing the highest quality products that complement the existing architecture is of the utmost importance. Designplan's bespoke units met the high standards needed for such a project. Their design team worked closely with ever yone involved to craft the ideal light fitting for the FCO's corridors and cafeteria areas. The fitting is based on Designplan's solid brass Holborn product - an elegant, high-output luminaire that is of ten used in heritage buildings.
A special wall-mounted unit was designed and manufactured for the restaurant areas. Hilal Najim, associate at Operon Design Consulting Engineers, explained why he chose Designplan light fittings: "Designplan is a renowned producer of robust light fittings, but for a building like the FCO we needed a certain style of light that would remain true to the original décor. Designplan's solution was custom-made for our specific requirements, their design team worked closely with me to perfect every detail." The Foreign & Commonwealth Office specification also includes bespoke emergency lighting indicators, which allow the facilities manager to quickly check the emergency lighting status.
